Archangel-Class Superdread WIP by ChroniclesofMan Archangel-Class Superdread WIP by ChroniclesofMan
--FULL VIEW RECOMMENDED--

The first ship of the Alliance's new EVOLVE series, the Archangel Superdreadnought is one of the most advanced ships in the galaxy. Actually smaller than the older Celestial-Class Superdreadnought, Archangel is viewed as the galaxy's first "Fast Superdreadnought." Capable of achieving a top sub-light speed of .025/.88(MAG Wall/MAG Burst), Archangel can keep up with the fastest battleships in the fleet and is designed around the Alliance's newest concept "The Fast Battlefleet."

As previously stated, Archangel's 5.5km long hulk is a full 500 meters shorter than the older Celestial-Class. However, that hull is married to 90% of the firepower, 180% of the counter-missile coverage/capability, the new 3-inch quad mass-drivers for point defense against frigates/corvettes, and an experimental high yield laser.

In addition, Archangel is clad in a new hybrid armor and uses the same material in its skeleton. Defined as a Fiber Reinforced Ceramic-Titanium Hybrid - this new material is much lighter than traditional Hardened Titanium and accounts for the ships light weight but improved strength and integrity (owning for its faster speeds).

However, Archangel's advancement's do not end there and many won't be fully realized till she leaves the shipyard.

will this new laser become a standard part of the EVOLVE series like the phalanx was for the PRIME. Also when I looked through your writing of both the novel and website I though it was everyone against the Alliance, Im puzzled by friendship with the Veridians. Maybe a reference sheet of friends and foes is in order? just a thought. thank you creating such an amazing world and sharing it with us all.

The Alliance isn't alone at all. There are other powers that are with it including the two micro super-power (the Atlanteans and the Adriaticans) as well as other smaller powers (the Veridians and the Archduchy of Alba). Together they all form the Interstellar Federation with the opposing, coalition driven Empyrean League forming the other side of the conflict.

As for EVOLVE, yes. The laser is standard as well as a NUMBER of new technologies that make the PRIME-NXGEN advancements look like meer "facelifts" :D

okay that makes more sense.I was mistaken then. Thanks or the clarification. As for the EVOLVE series Im very curious to see what other technical advances the alliance R&D department has come up with.

Ok you win, I join the alliance instead to be captain of one of these :)

love it and it looks very high tech far more so than previous designs.

Slick, very slick. It sounds like it could be a potential game changer in a conflict. I do find it interesting that it employs a laser weapon. I had believed you wouldn't include them in this universe. How much destructive power does the laser yield and is it designed to be used against capital ships? Is it powered directly from the main power plant or does it have a dedicated power source?

I do question the wisdom of including an experimental weapon in a superdreadnaught, though. I would think the Alliance would use smaller, less resource intensive vessels as testbeds for experimental weaponry. Also, I noticed that there seems to be some different looking turrets above the laser turret emplacement. Are those the new point defense mass drivers?

Here is my final question. How does this ship stack up against the other two superdreadnaught classes? Would the Alliance consider its technology on future vessels of those classes if they prove their worth? It might not be as big as the Celestial Class (;_;), but its still a mighty large vessel.

The laser is pretty much useless in traditional ship to ship combat because it is no where near powerful enough to breath through the main shields of a starship its size. However, it does have some "untraditional" applications I won't be revealing here (but needless to say, the rest of the universe is also scratching their heads as to why the Alliance (and their allies the Veridians) have included these lasers on their newest ships). Power wise, it is powered via the main propulsion plant by the way of gravitational potential cells (essentially huge gravity capacitors that convert gravitational energy into electrical).

Experimental was more of an "artistic" term than a true technical term. The weapon has been used on other experimental platforms and has been fielded successfully on Veridian ships. This is simply the first Alliance ship with the power train necessary to provide power for the weapon itself; and Yes, those are the new point defense mass drives which I had previously said were located elsewhere on other designs because I was too lazy to draw them :p

This ship is as powerful as Celestial in many respects. While her missile broadside is 90% the size of the Celestial's, she benefits from being able to fire the new Type 80 and Type 80E missiles which have a higher yield and improved electronic capabilities. In addition, her mass-drivers are the new 110inch turreted guns so her broadside salvo in gun range is actually about (if not greater) than Celestial's despite having only 60% of the turrets. All of this married to a faster and stronger hull means Archangel could most likely defeat a Celestial in a all out duel; and she is hands down more powerful than the Admiral-Class. And yes, the Alliance has halted production/development of the NXGEN series of starships (which included Celestial, Vanguard, and Storm of Olympus) in favor of Archangel and the other designs of the EVOLVE series.

Untraditional applications? perhaps combating the as-yet-unrevealed main baddies of this universe?

Pssst. Maybe bombarding planets or long range targets. :) Also I find it ironic that your comment is on the 4th of July. :D

I like the way your designs have a clear evolution to them. Also, the lines on this one kick ass. :D I'm guessing the experimental laser is that large circular emplacement amidships?

How does she perform in atmosphere?

Uh...she doesn't? I mean they can enter the atmosphere at VERY low speeds to dock. But this ship is 5.5km long and NOT intended to enter the atmosphere of a planet. She's a black-space superiority warship. She fights there.

There is no reason to take that large a ship INTO the atmosphere. She can do all her "work" against a planet and planetary targets safely from orbit. In atmosphere, she would have to drop her shields to minimum so she doesn't rip the ground beneath her apart so she would be extremely vulnerable.

Atmospheric operations are done by smaller ships (usually destroyers or at most light cruisers).
