A Kingdom Rises by ChroniclesofMan A Kingdom Rises by ChroniclesofMan
Evening All,

I know its been a while since I submitted a piece of art. Simply put, work has me busy. Well that, and I've been doing some thinking on the CoM front.

After talking to a few of the major contributing members and discussing some changes I had in mind, I've decided to do a few things. The first is to remove the Coalition. I know alot of you loved their ship designs. I did too, and I plan to re-use them in some capacity. But simply put, the Coalition was too one-dimensional for my tastes. They were always the "bad" guys and while that was easy to fix writing wise, I felt that the avenue it would have taken me down would have been far too predictable/overdone.

Consequently I decided to add a big helping of spice (IMHO) to CoM. While I kept the Alliance (our democratic nation), the Empyrean Empire (the total dictatorship), and the smaller nations I had planned; I replaced the Coalition with a new nation: The Kingdom of the Four Crowns. This is new nation is going to be rich in history, backstory, and will be comprised of 4 very distinct and unique Kingdoms that have developed a dynamic and interlocked political and military structure that is simultaneously archaic and modern. Needless to say I have some big plans.

That being siad, I wanted to get a WIP out to you all since I hadn't posted much. As such, I give you the first ship (WIP obviously) of the Kingdom, the Lord Robert-Class Heavy Battleship.

A powerhouse of firepower, this vessel reflects the Kingdom's gun-heavy navy. Equipped with 4 quad 100-inch turreted guns and a pair of 200-inch axial guns, not to mention the recently fielded gravity rifle - or grav rifle for short (The Alliance is loosing this tech in favor of a more narrowed focus in missile tech for story purposes). This weapon loadout emphasizes the Kingdom's stance of "point blank range" combat, and once this behemoth is within gun range there are very few ships that can stand up to her fire power.

*Notes*
-The horse emblem on the side is the sigil for House Brand - the ruling house of the western Kingdom of Stormhall. A silhouette of the native Stormhorse - a six legged beast that is slightly larger than a terran Clydesdale, the Stormhorse is a formidable beast, capable of surviving the high winds and heavy snows of Stormhall.

-Each of the four Kingdom's ships will have the sigil of their nation in place of the that side sigil as well as replace the golden bow spirit with their nation's sigil.

-The ship is 4.5km long. Each Missile launcher hatch holds 3 single launchers giving the ship a total missile broadside of 297 (might need to check my numbers on that - that was a very quick count for this post).

I hope you all enjoy this new nation as much as I do. Long Live the High King of the Crowns!

Talking about channeling David Weber's Honour Harrington's Kingdom Of Manticore Universe.  I wouldn't be surprise that you would write a cross-over story of those inhabitants from both universes of encountering each other in freak space-time phenomena.

Nah. I am not a fan of cross over stories. And the Kingdom in this picture is FAR different from manticores.  As is the combat they focus on. The more and more I write, the more and more I find the ideas divergent.  Thanks for the look though (at the artwork that is).

The design is on the term of ingeering useful. This interresting look and the disposition of the diverse parts is cool too. I don't know what to say more (you technical datas are nicely describe.)

Just great job, as for the other cruisers design.

Did you sneak an update in here?

Also, no lasers for point defense? And surprisingly few counter missile batteries, although she has a ton of those smaller quad turrets.

Right, I wondered what had happened to it. It's becoming a very beautiful ship. With her profile she gives off this image of brute force without becoming bulky.

With her heavy forward battery placement she has the feel of the Nelson class of Royal Navy Battleships. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but I like it. I hope this layout remains a trademark of the kingdom.

Please remind me to never standt in the way of this behemoth. Every Captain woo Fights against this Monster. Will wish to be in a othert place. If I only imagine it. I still can Wet my pants.

It is a Nice Drawing. the Side view reminds me of some Asian Knife (Tanto like).
You set the Turrets (the 4 quad 100-incher) in a 0 and 180 Grad direction heav you tryed a 45 and a 135 grad direction.?
p.s. Sorry for my Bad English

4.5km O.O That's one massive ship. Like the design too, and as manticoran made an observation of, very reminiscent of WWI warships/ dreadnaughts. So when are you planning to release more info on this new nation, sounds like it's going to add a very interesting aspect to your universe?

Well, that's certainly different. And I thought the Alliance just goined their midships mounted gravity thingamabob? You just plonked it onto the Legendary class.

Anyway, nice to see you're going with a less obviously RAR, EVIL! group.

If you read through the description though for the image, I stated that the Alliance is loosing that tech (so expect it to be gone from Legendary) in favor of this nation.

And yes, this nation will be far from the "evil" direction I had taken the Coalition.

I did, only I read it as "In-story, the alliance will get away from this tech" as opposed to "In the story the allaince won't have this tech".

It's a bit of a pity, I like the way the Legendary looked.

A nation comprised of kingdoms and is also a kingdom itself?

I am getting a very Hapsburg feel from this setup. I like it.

You say your Alliance is going more of the missile tech than heavy gun tech (ie the Gravity Gun), why not have the 3 of the super power star nations have this tech? Like today with the US, China & Russia. Heavy Strategic weapons on mobile platforms? This can create tension & great story plots especially the black ops kind.

Because I want to create a distinct style between each nation in terms of combat. Its a different approach to what you are suggesting and I prefer to generate tension through arms races, etc. The parallels are less cold war and more wwii in terms of feel.

Interesting how you mounted the vessels main battery forward, is that a bit of a weakness when it comes to Kingdom ships, or is it designed with a certain purpose in mind?

Actually, if you look at all the ships, their weapons are facing forward. That is because due to the use of gravity propulsion, guns can't fire aft (in either direction) so there is no need to place a gun back that way.

To each their own. You find that dull, but the dynamic can be quite compelling. There are numerous stories where a human story has drawn people in. That's what I want to be. Not another star trek, aliens, babylon 5, etc.

Something I've been wondering about, why do practically all your CoM ships look like giant guns more or less? I mean, this is a good looking ship, but still.
Reply
:iconchroniclesofman:
ChroniclesofMan Featured By Owner Jan 17, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Because of the physics of the universe and the fact they have huge axial guns which they use. No different mechanics wise than why you have ships shaped like guns in Halo, Aliens, Homeworld, etc. The physics of the universe dictates the shape. And I'd argue alliance ships didn't look like guns, they looked like knives.

:iconstarlightdraik:
starlightdraik Featured By Owner Jan 17, 2012
Meh, its a matter of perspective. Ah yes,the laws of physics. Though I wouldn't think they would apply in a vacuum like space. Sure there's the gravity of any stars or planets that comes into play, but what else could cause the ship wrights to make their designs like so?
Reply
:iconchroniclesofman:
ChroniclesofMan Featured By Owner Jan 17, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I wasn't talking about the physics in terms of the properties of space. I'm talking about the mechanics of the universe. Ships with large broadside centric combat will adopt a longer hull form. It simultaneously reduces their forward cross section (so you aren't a big target when closing to range) while also maximizing the space on the side of the hull for missile hardpoints. Furthermore, when it comes to the gravity propulsion, a narrow, longer ship is what works best.

That being said, it boils down to the fact that I have affinity for the long, sleek warships of WWII and it was the same sense I was trying to convey with CoM ships. I think your "all look like a gun" dumbs down the work significantly though. I won't argue that there is a specific spatial dimension configuration that they follow, but there is a great diversity in between nations outside of that.

And I do look forward to seeing the distinctions this new nation has. And taking into account broadside mounted weapons, plus a slim front, you have a good point.
